TRANSFORMABLE STAGE AND LOWER SYSTEM OF MECHANICS

The stage today resembles an ultra-modern transformer unit. It is 698 square metres. The stage structure consists of 21 traps/ lifting platforms. Each of them can rise by 4.6 meters above the level of the stage podiums and go down to a depth of 3.3 meters, change the inclination relative to each other and create any stage topography. 20 platforms can use a special elevator, it allows actors to appear or disappear during the scene (there are special elevators under the stage for this purpose).

The so-called "lower system of mechanics" also includes the mechanization of the orchestra pit, which enables the orchestra to play at different levels of the stage. The orchestra pit can be moved as well. It can be placed in a special pocket underneath the auditorium with or without musical instruments. It can also be raised to the level of the stage thus increasing the proscenium by 108 square meters.

At the back of the stage there is a special safe for storing floor coverings or ‘wagons’ as they are called in theatrical parlance. There are 3 types of them. The floor for opera performances has a turntable and ring which can move in one or opposing directions. A sliding ballet floor has a special vinyl surface. The third floor, a special running track which resembles the treadmill, can be installed in 5 places on stage and is stored in the wings. The performers can pretend they are walking somewhere without actually disappearing from the stage.

The stage has a slant of 4 degrees.  This enables the audience to see the whole stage from any seat. But also there is a possibility to transform the stage in the horizontal position.

All platforms and mechanisms move silently, smoothly, their speed can reach 0.5 meters per second. Powerful hydraulic, mechanical and modern electronic equipment is used to drive all this machinery — 1.5 thousand tons of metal are concentrated under the stage at a depth of 14 meters.
