CONGRATULATIONS ON THE PREMIER!

People say that French dramatist Victorien Sardou admired Giacomo Puccini’s music. Therefore, he agreed that his play La Tosca form the basis of the libretto of this Italian composer, whose works delighted him. And Puccini composed the work which is considered to be an opera masterpiece for more than a century. On 24 February Tosca returns on the Belarusian stage. By the way, it will be the 6th production of Tosca at the Bolshoi theatre of Belarus (the previous one was in 1937, 1950, 1969, 1991 and 2010).

Tosca is a great work, which combines dramatic art and music in an amazing way. Sardou’s talent multiplied by the Puccini’s genius phenomenally affects the audience. And it is not an accident that this opera is one of the most popular in the world’, the principal stage director and recipient of the Francysk Skaryna medal Mikhail Pandzhavidze said. He is the one who brings Puccini's masterpiece back to the repertoire of the Belarusian Bolshoi. Pandzhavidze himself stages this opera not for the first time. It will be his second production of Tosca on the stage of Belarusian Bolshoi. ‘Eight years after the premiere of the previous production, I am even tougher on the heroes of this opera. Here, everything is not so simple, as we used to interpret in this plot’, Pandzhavidze continued. ‘Tosca’s character is the character of the fallen angel. Moved by destructive passions, Tosca is steadily becoming a traitor, murderer and suicide as a result, passing the entire way of deadly sins. And it is on this point I want to focus the attention of the audience, who came to our performance.’

The stage turned into Rome in 1800. The Church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, Palazzo Farnese, Castel Sant'Angelo appeared thanks to the chief set designer, recipient of the Francysk Skaryna medal, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Kostiuchenko. ‘I’ve been working on Tosca already for the third time,’ Alexander Kostiuchenko said. ‘By revising my previous productions, I saw an opportunity to reveal the image of the performance through new solutions more sharply. I'm not interested in repeating myself. I want these opera to be interesting to the audience and the tragedy of this beautiful opera was also conveyed.’

In 2011 the Belarusian audience saw Gioachino Rossini’s bright, sunny, lively, full of energy Il barbiere di Siviglia staged by Mikhail Pandzhavidze in tandem with Gianluca Marcianò. And at the end of January they start to work together again on Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece Tosca. ‘I'm happy!’ Italian Maestro didn’t hide emotions. ‘We had an amazing experience of collaboration. And I can openly say: Mikhail Pandzhavidze is an exceptional director. He looks at performance not only from the point of view of its dramatic aspect. He really knows the music of the works that he stages. He understands that these two things are interrelated. And if we are talking about Puccini, it is even more important. Close your eyes, plunge into his brilliant music and you get the image of what is going on in the opera. The imagery of the Puccini’s music is incredible!’

On 24 February at the premiere featured the People's Artist of Belarus and laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus Nina Scharubina as Tosca; winner of international competitions Aleksey Mikutel as Cavaradossi and People's Artist of Belarus, recipient of the Order of Francysk Skaryna Vladimir Petrov. In the next performances the audience will also see: recipient of the Francysk Skaryna Medal, winner of international competitions Tatiana Petrova; winner of international competition Ekaterina Golovleva in the role of Tosca (also this role was prepared by probationer Anastasia Vakhomchik); People's Artist of Belarus, recipient the Order of Francysk Skaryna, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus Sergey Frankovsky; recipient of the Francysk Skaryna Medal, winner of international competitions Eduard Martyniuk in the role of Cavaradossi; Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus, winner of international competitions Stanislav Trifonov; Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Gromov in the role of Scarpia.

The chorus, orchestra, supernumeraries and Children’s Musical Theatre Studio of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus took part in the performance. Chorus master is People's Artist of Belarus, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus Nina Lomanovich. Costume designer is Eleonora Grigoruk.
