Mikhail Pandzhavidze

Recipient of the Francysk Skaryna Medal

Mikhail Pandzhavidze graduated from the Musical Theatre faculty (Stage Directing) of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) (workshops Miller and Osherovsky); he also finished the graduating programme under the scientific adviser Professor, People’s Artist of the USSR Georgy Ansimov. In 2001 Pandzhavidze was appointed head of the directors team of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

He worked with conductors Evgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvenskiy, Mark Ermler, Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Andropov and directors Boris Prolorovsky, Matvey Osherovsky, Robert Sturua, Georgy Ansimov, Joakim Sharoev, Alexander Titel. He participated in the Valery Barsova and Maria Maksakova International Vocal Festival (Astrakhan), Moscow Easter Festival and Feodor Chaliapin International Festival (Kazan). He is the author of a number of thematic and anniversary evenings.

From 2006 to 2008 he was the artistic director of the Volgorgad State Theatre “Tsaritsyn Opera”.

He was honoured with the Ğabdulla Tuqay State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan for the production of Poet’s Love (2008). This performance became the winner of the Golden Mask National Theatre Award in the nomination “Best Male Role” (2008). Since 2010 he is the principal director of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus. In 2015 he was awarded the Special Prize of the President of the Republic of Belarus for significant achievements in the development of opera art and staging of The Tsar’s Bride by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.  

He has been the director of more than 60 productions in opera and ballet theatres of Tatarstan, Novosibirsk, Magnitogorsk, Yekaterinburg, in the Astrakhan State Music Theatre, the Moroccan National Theatre. His repertoire includes: Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky, The Snow Maiden and The Tsar’s Bride by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Eugene Onegin and Iolanta by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Der Schauspieldirektor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Rigoletto, Nabucco and Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, Madama Butterfly and Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, etc.

At the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus he staged Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco (2010), Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca (2010), Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida (2011), Gioachino Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (2011), Dmitry Smolsky’s The Grey Legend (2012), Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot (2013), Francis Poulenc’s La voix humaine (2013), Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone (2013), Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (2014), Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride (2014), Marina Morozova’s Doctor Ouchithurts (2015), Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth (2016), Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana (2017), Richard Strauss’ Salome (2018).
