EYYUB GULIYEV. AGAIN IN MINSK

The name of the winner of international competitions, conductor of Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, guest conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus and principal guest conductor of Vasiliy Safonov Academic Symphonic Orchestra (Russia), recipient of the Prize of the President of Azerbaijan Republic for Art Workers Eyyub Guliyev is known almost to all major theatre venues of the world. He is always invited, he is always welcomed. On 17 May maestro Guliyev, whose name is included in the “Golden Book” of Azerbaijan's Young Talents, will conduct GiuseppeVerdi's Aida on the stage of Belarusian Bolshoi.

‘In this music, the music of the great Giuseppe Verdi, I feel comfortable’, the Honoured Artist of Azerbaijan Eyyub Guliyev admitted. ‘Traditionally, I conduct most of the operas of this Italian composer (La traviata, Il trovatore, Un ballo in maschera) at the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. During the studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory I turned to the brilliant Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi. And in Austria, at Konzerthaus in Vienna, I’ve been offered to conduct the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. We performed the composer's Quartet, which you can hear so rarely.

Yes, Giuseppe Verdi is so admired everywhere. Perhaps there is no conductor who has not turned to the works of this genius. And I'm happy that now, thanks to the invitation of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus, I can work on another masterpiece – Aida. This opera is infinitely dear to me. When I studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, I had the opportunity to see historical recordings where Arturo Toscanini conducted the opera Aida in New York, in full, by heart… It is a fantastic phenomenon! I often review this record now. For me, this is an example and a kind of reference point: Toscanini seems to connect me with the composer himself. And in the Belarusian Bolshoi I’m going to conduct in a way that it deserves Giuseppe Verdi’s name.

The invitation of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus to conduct Aida is an honour and certainly an important event for me. If possible, I always try to take on such works, which are performed quite often, but have a certain complexity for conductors, especially when you come to the theatre literally for 2-3 days. Each conductor has his own vision and his own reading of the music material. Of course, I have no right to change the interpretation and go against the principles and traditions of both the Belarusian Bolshoi and any other theatre, which invites me. First of all, I respect the directors of the performance. That is why I always ask to send me a musical score and video version of the opera. And yet, I think I’ll try to bring something personal in the performance of Aida. It is always a pleasure to work with the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus, because the orchestra, soloists and chorus are true professionals. Sometimes it seems that one gesture is enough for them to understand everything without words. And this is the indicator of the highest level.

When I come to Minsk I am always overwhelmed by extremely positive emotions. For the first time I conducted Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata at the Belarusian Bolshoi. I hope that Aida, another masterpiece of the genius composer, which always becomes a source of inspiration for both conductors and soloists, will bring something new to our relations with the theater’.

On 17 May Aida features the Honoured Artist of Russia Akhmed Agadi as Radames, People's Artist of Belarus Anastasia Moskvina as Aida, Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus Aksana Yakushevich as Amneris, Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus Stanislav Trifonov as Amonasro, People’s Artist of Belarus Vasily Kovalchuk as Ramfis, Honoured Artist of Republic Belarus Alexander Keda as the King of Egypt.
