On April 8, the People's Artist of Belarus would have turned 80. On this day, the performance of Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi will be dedicated to the memory of the renowned Belarusian singer.
Yuri Bastrikov was dedicated to the Belarusian theatre for more than thirty years of his artistic biography. The singer shone in heroic dramatic parts, particularly well in Verdi's operas. One of his favourite parts was Rigoletto in the eponymous opera by Giuseppe Verdi. He sang Amonasro in Aida, Rodrigo in Don Carlos, Germont in La traviata, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, and many others.
He possessed a strong and expressive voice of wide range combined with striking artistry allowing him to create memorable images of many facets. His repertoire included the role of Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Escamillo in Carmen by Georges Bizet, Valentin in Faust by Charles Gounod, Scarpia in Tosca and Sharpless in Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini. In The Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach, the singer performed the roles of Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto and Miracle.
His extraordinary, powerful dramatic baritone shone in the operas by Russian composers. He sang Igor in the opera Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, Gryaznoi and Prince Afron in The Tsar's Bride and The Golden Cockerel by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Shalkovity in Khovanshchina by Modest Mussorgsky, Tomsky, Yeletsky and Robert in The Queen of Spades and Iolanta by Pyotr Tchaikovsky; Stenio, Napoleon and Denisov in the opera Maddalena and War and Peace by Sergei Prokofiev.
The singer brilliantly performed the lead roles in the operas by Belarusian composers, including The Star of Venus by Yuri Semenyako, and Andrey Kostenya by Nikolay Aladov, Giordano Bruno and The Lady’s Visit by Sergey Kortes, Galka by Stanislaw Moniuszko, and Life Path by Heinrich Wagner, King Stach's Wild Hunting by Vladimir Soltan and The Prince of Novograd by Andrey Bondarenko.
