Artem Makarov began his professional education at the Secondary Special Music School at the Zagir Ismagilov Ufa State Institute of Arts. In 2000, he graduated in piano from the Zagir Ismagilov Ufa State Institute of Arts with distinction. In 2003, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Zagir Ismagilov Ufa State Institute of Arts in opera and symphonic conducting. In 2015, he did the two-year apprenticeship programme at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.
In 1997, the young musician began work at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre as an opera company accompanist and then he was appointed to the position of conductor.
From 2003 to 2010, the conductor combined work at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre and Ankara State Opera (Turkey). At the same time, he worked as a guest conductor of the Istanbul State Opera and collaborated with the leading symphony orchestras of Turkey. The maestro also worked at the Anadolu University (Eskişehir, Turkey), where he taught opera singing at the Vocal Arts Department for several years.
From 2010 to 2023, Artem Makarov was the principal conductor of the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre. His productions on the Ufa stage include: Faust by Charles Gounod, The Tsar’s Bride by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Hercules by George Frideric Handel, Carmen by Georges Bizet, Salavat Yulaev by Zagir Ismagilov, etc. He also conducted numerous concerts and international music competitions at the theatre.
From 2013 to 2015, Artem Makarov combined his activities in the theatre with his work as the musical director of the Antalya State Opera (Turkey). At the Antalya Opera House his productions include: Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, La bohème by Giacomo Puccini. In September 2014, he took part in the 21st Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival in Turkey (La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi).
In 2016, he co-organized the 1st Feodor Chaliapin International Singing Competition (Ufa).
In 2017, Artem Makarov was awarded the Golden Mask National Theatre Award.
In 2019 and 2020, he joined the jury of the Golden Mask National Theatre Award, as well as the expert council of the Onegin National Opera Award.
In 2020, Artem Makarov was awarded the Musical Heart of the Theatre Award in the nomination "Best Conductor" for staging of Jacques Offenbach's La Grande-duchesse de Gérolstein.
In 2021, he was awarded the title of the People's Artist of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
In 2023, he became the principal conductor of the Natalia Sats Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre for Young Audience, where he conducted the world premieres of operas Das Nusch-Nuschi by Paul Hindemith and Die Vögel by Walter Braunfels, as well as ballets Giselle by Adolphe Adam and Romeo and Juliet by Sergey Prokofiev.
In 2023, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus.
His productions on the Belarusian stage includes: Iolanta (2023) and Eugene Onegin (2024) by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. In 2024 he became the musical director of the project Pathétique Memory Book, which is based on the pieces by Belarusian composers and documentary evidence of the tragedy and heroism of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War.
In April 2024, he took part in the International Opera Festival Slavic House at the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.
In July 2024, as part of the company, she conducted in the Gala Concert Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi Invaders and the 45th Anniversary of the Nicaragua Revolution held at the Rubén Darío National Theatre in Managua, Nicaragua.
