On 30 August, 21st Pafos Aphrodite Festival tool place at the Medieval Castle Square in Pafos. Every year the best opera houses of the world perform here. This year, Verdi’s Macbeth, a mystical drama of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus directed by Mikhail Pandzhavidze, became the real adornment of the festival.
Three nights in a row, on 30, 31 August and 1 September the music of the brilliant Italian Giuseppe Verdi was performed at the Medieval Castle Square in Pafos, Cyprus. Macbeth staged by the principal stage director of the theatre Mikhail Pandzhavidze went on such a long tour for the first time. The People's Artist of Belarus Nina Scharubina, winner of international competition Ekaterina Golovleva, Honoured Artists of the Republic of Belarus Stanislav Trifonov and Vladimir Gromov, Andrei Valentii performed the lead roles. The chief chorus master of the theatre People's Artist of Belarus Nina Lomanovich was the head of the tour. Three nights in a row the principal guest conductor Viktor Ploskina conducted. Ivan Kostyakhin conducted the stage band.
William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth Giuseppe Verdi considered one of the best works of world literature. Perhaps that is why this opera is among the undoubted masterpieces of the Italian composer. The composer revealed the darkest sides of the human subconscious, believing that the music of Macbeth should only ‘emphasize poetry, not the composer’.
