On 20 February Puccini's favorite opera Madama Butterfly will be performed on our stage. The love story of a young romantic Japanese woman, Cio-Cio-San, and an American sailor, Pinkerton, is a story in which a happy ending is not provided either by the authors or by life itself…The opera is based on the drama Geisha by David Belasco. Having seen the play during his stay in London, Puccini was excited by its vivid honesty. He proposed Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa to write an opera libretto. Soon, music was created. The premiere of the opera took place on 17 February 1904 in Milan,and... it was failed and removed from the repertoire. But three months later, the production, performed with minor changes, was a triumphant success and quickly gained a strong reputation as one of the most popular modern operas. On 20 February the winner of international competition Marina Moroz will perform the role of Suzuki on the Belarusian stage for the first time. Tatiana Petrova will appear as Cio-Cio-San, Alexey Mikutel as Pinkerton, Vladimir Petrov as Sharpless. Aleh Lessoun will conduct.
