The Renewal of Don Quixote. Premiere!

‘The hot-tempered, passionate children of happy Andalusia, they are so mad about their national dance that they cannot stand or sit still when these fiery dances reach the full swing…..They go into shrieks, peals of laughter, they throw their cloaks to the dancers’ feet, they never give a second thought to their everyday life with its misfortunes….The crowd is devoted to the one and only cult – passion’, wrote Marius Petipa in his memoirs after a trip to Spain. On 24 and 25 March at the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus we will find out how temperamental Spanish dances and how beautiful classics can be.

This production is one of the most popular classical ballets in the entire theatre world. On the stage of the Belarusian Bolshoi, it was staged six times. On 24 and 25 March, the audience will see the seventh version. A cheerful, light, incendiary story of two lovers Kitri and Basil will come to life in new scenery and new costumes.

For the first time Don Quixote was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus in 1941, then in 1947, 1952, 1962, 1979. The 1989 production was performed on the Belarusian stage until recently.

Now the production team includes: choreographer, libretto co–author, the People's Artist of the USSR and Belarus, artistic director of the theatre Valentin Elizariev, conductor, the Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus Nikolai Koliadko, the People's Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Okunev (sets, costumes, lighting design concept) and lighting designer Nina Ivankina.
