KOMI THEATRE AT THE BOLSHOI

On November 20 the Bolshoi Theatre will host a performance of the Russian production of the ballet Yell, which has become a legend, featuring the choreography of the world-famous dancer Andrey Merkuriev, based on the novel Go to Golgotha by the classic Russian writer Alexander Zinoviev. This production will open the series of the guest performances of the Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Komi Republic in Minsk. The Russian company will perform on our stage for the first time.

The production promises to become a real discovery for Minsk residents and guests of the Belarusian capital. The ballet was choreographed and staged by Andrey Merkuriev, Honoured Artist of Russia and the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, laureate of the GOLDEN MASK national theatre award. It was Yell that became Andrey Merkuriev’s brilliant debut as a choreographer and stager.

“After reading Alexander Zinoviev’s novel Go to Golgotha I thought that I was very similar to its main character… This is a story about choosing a path, about whether to be like everyone else or to go your own way, which is a priori long and difficult. My character chooses the path of solitude because he wants to preserve his true self, achieve something new, and change the world, says Andrey Merkuriev.

The audience will see four productions of the Russian company. Yell will open the series of the guest performances on November 20. On the mornings of November 21 and November 22, the series will continue with Efrem Podgaits’ fairy-tale family opera Thumbelina. Giacomo Puccini’s Cio-Cio-San is scheduled for November 21, and Yakov Perepelitsa’s ballet Yag-Mort will be presented on November 22.

It is worth mentioning that the artistic director of the Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Komi Republic, young conductor Yury Demidovich is a native of Minsk.

Thumbelina by Efrem Podgaits. November 21 and 22, 11:00

This is a bright fairy-tale story filled with magical music, interesting contemporary choreography, lively and direct interaction with children. Thumbelina is the ideal choice for children’s first acquaintance with the art of opera. Bright melodies, a dynamic plot, and fairy-tale characters will captivate even the youngest viewers. Adults will appreciate the subtle irony, the poetry of the material, and the intricate musical texture of the production. The melodious and ethereal arias of Thumbelina, the Swallow and  the Elf Prince, the funny songs of the Toad and the Mouse, and the sinister motifs of the Mole – all of this will create a special and unique atmosphere.

Cio-Cio-San by Giacomo Puccini. November 21, 18:00

This dramatic love story of two people belonging to different cultures is considered the most tender and touching opera by the brilliant Italian composer. The action of the production unfolds in Nagasaki at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. A young Japanese girl falls in love with a lieutenant of the American navy and faithfully awaits his return from a country where the laws of Japan mean absolutely nothing. After his betrayal, having been raised in the land of samurai, she is doomed to the only possible way out...

Giacomo Puccini’s music reveals the experiences of the characters delicately and passionately, mirroring their emotional state with extraordinary precision.

Yag-Mort by Yakov Perepelitsa. November 22, 18:00

The first national ballet by Yakov Perepelitsa Yag-Mort is the trademark of the Russian theatre, a true milestone in the development of the musical and theatrical art of the Komi Republic.

The philosophical concept of the ballet, the clash of the eternal problems of good and evil, the all-conquering power of love, the struggle against envy and betrayal, the brightness and musicality of the ballet Yag-Mort allow it to remain modern, popular, and in demand among audiences today. The ballet is distinguished by its mysterious plot, vividly expressive music of Yakov Perepelitsa, melodious tunes that captivate with their originality and sincerity. The production showcases rich national flavour, harmoniously blending folk dance with classical choreographic patterns.

Yell will be performed to recorded music. The other productions will be accompanied by the orchestra of the Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Komi Republic.
