‘I will be happy if, listening to my songs, at least one person will feel like doing something good to people…’ Georg Ots
When the film Mister X was premiered in 1958, all the country spoke of Georg Ots, and Imre Kálmán’s operetta Die Zirkusprinzessin became a calling card of numerous musical theatres. Georg Ots found a great number of admirers; the beauty of his voice and his aristocratic appearance won hearts at once; he was the embodiment of honour, nobility and fortitude.
The charming Georg Ots became an icon of style and good musical taste for several generations. In Soviet republics, as well as in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and other countries, there was not a single home lacking the eminent singer’s vinyl records. People still keep on admiring his magnificent voice and performing manner. It will not be presumptuous to say that owing to his multifaceted talent Georg Ots became a legend in his lifetime. His repertoire covered diverse genres, from operas to operettas and songs.
The programme of the concert includes arias and duets from the most popular operas and operettas. Georg Ots’s Don Giovanni and Papageno, Porgy and Mister X were unforgettable. The audience will enjoy music by Mozart, Kálmán, Lehár, Gershwin, Cilea. The evening will star brilliant soloists of the Estonian National Opera and the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus. No wonder that the concert will feature the artists from Tallinn who have been awarded the Georg Ots Prize, namely René Soom and Heli Veskus. The singers will be accompanied by the wonderful pianist of the Estonian National Opera Tarmo Eespere.
“The Knight of Music Georg Ots”, a display prepared by the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum, will also take place in the foyer of the theatre on the evening of 4 November. The exhibition will comprise archival documents, posters, newspaper articles, drawings, pictures from the collection of the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum.
