Sergei Moskalkov as Amonasro

On 20 January the role of Amonasro in Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida will be performed by the Russian baritone Sergei Moskalkov, artistic director and soloist of the theatre Russian Opera, also known well for his performances at the Bolshoi Theatre and Helikon-Opera.

The Belarusian audience knows Sergei Moskalkov by his Tonio in the premiere performance of Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo at the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus in 2014, the role of Almaviva which he sang in the premiere performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in September and later in the same opera presented at the 7th Minsk International Christmas Opera Forum.

Sergei Moskalkov was born in Chelyabinsk. After finishing Chelyabinsk Music School where he majored in trumpet, the musician entered the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts. Along with his studies, he was an apprentice at the Moscow Evgeny Kolobov’s theatre Novaya Opera. He graduated from the academy in 1995 into the Moscow Musical Theatre Helikon-Opera, where he sang till 2001. Sergei Moskalkov also trained at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre.

In 2003, the singer made his debut with the Bolshoi Theatre as Nick Shadow at the premiere of the first Bolshoi Theatre production of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake's Progress (music director Alexander Titov, director and designer Dmitry Chernyakov). In the Bolshoi 2004/05 season, the young baritone took part in productions of Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi (the lead role) and The Children of Rosenthal by Leonid Desyatnikov (the role of Verdi). He also sang the roles of Papageno, the Speaker (Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) and Ping (Turandot by Giacomo Puccini).

In 1997, Sergei Moskalkov participated in the music festival "Chaliapin Evenings in Ufa". With Helikon-Opera, he toured France, Spain, Austria, and Lebanon. With the Musa Jalil Tatar Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, the singer toured the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and the UK.

Among his highlights one should emphasize the role of Count di Luna in Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi in Los Angeles, Scarpia in Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca in Finland, Salieri in Mozart and Salieri by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, the title role in Mazepa at the New Israeli Opera.

His repertoire includes the title roles in Eugene Onegin and Mazepa, Tomsky, Yeletsky in The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky; Grigory Gryaznoy in The Tsar's Bride, Tsar Dodon, Prince Afron in The Golden Cockerel by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; Escamillo in Carmen by Georges Bizet; Amonasro in Aida, Ford in Falstaff, the title role in Macbeth by Verdi; Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini; Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto, Miracle in Les contes d'Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach.

Currently, Sergei Moskalkov is artistic director and soloist of the theatre Russian Opera. The singer works with the State Academic Symphony Chorus of Russia lead by Valery Polyansky (he has sang the baritone parts in Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano, Francesca da Rimini by Sergey Rachmaninov, Cherevichki by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli at the big hall of the Moscow Conservatory) and with the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yuri Bashmet.
