The Big New Year’s Ball at the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus was held for the eighth time. Traditionally, it took place on the New Year’s night of the old calendar. Over 650 guests came to the theatre to see in the year of the Fire Rooster.
At eight in the evening, the theatre opened its doors, and the first visitors were welcomed by the Astrologer, the Learned Cat, the Goldfish and the Golden Cockerel. After all, the genius of Russian poetry himself reined the ball this year. You could meet Alexander Pushkin among the waltzing couples. And the heroes of his works tried to make a real holiday for all the guests.
One could enjoy Pushkin’s poetry in a literary salon, to hear wonderful songs performed by leading opera soloists and to become a member of the cheerful trial "Tenors vs Basses" at the Chamber Hall, to learn their fate from astrologers, to feel themselves like real artists on the makeshift set (by the way, under the guidance of renowned director Sergey Girgel). Traditionally, there was an art salon where masters of brushes and pencils could draw your caricature portrait within five minutes, and a mehndi saloon, where you could make a beautiful henna tattoo.
Still, it was a ball! Supervised by the Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus, ballet master Yulia Dyatko, dozens of couples (ladies in puffy dresses and gentlemen in smart suits or tuxedos), to their and other guests’ delight, solemnly walked in the polonaise and beautifully swirled in the waltz. The visitors enjoyed a stately contradance, merry polka and lively gallop. Dancing and singing lasted till morning also in the Chamber Hall. The highlight of the night was a concert surprise from the director Galina Galkovskaya. All the leading artists of the theatre danced on the main stage under the baton of Andrey Galanov.
After the clock chimed midnight and the traditional champagne was drunk, the celebration continued! In the salon of the Queen of Spades tricks were shown, and the amazing Fakhraddin Show and Neon Show in the lobby were received with rapturous applause.
Traditionally, New Year’s theatre prizes from BelSwissBank JSC were awarded at the ball. The prizes went to the Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus, soloist of the opera company Alexander Keda, principal dancer Igor Onoshko, corps de ballet dancer Viktoria Beginina, orchestra musician Alexey Afanasyev and chorus artist Alexander Fokin.
Music, poetry, dances, songs, games, shows, magic, entertainment, champagne – it was a lovely ball! But we do not bid farewell for long, we say "see you soon!"
