Georges Bizet’s brilliant opera about the fatal beauty Carmen touches the hearts of the audience worldwide for more than 140 years. The Belarusian audience is lucky, because they will be able to see the ‘Polish version’ of this masterpiece on 18 December. The traditional Spanish dresses and rude working uniform, orange scarves against the blood-red scene and military jeep, near which soldiers in the khaki pants and black shirts are bored… This opera will smash the idea of the classic opera to pieces, because our viewers have not seen such Carmen yet. On 18 December the stage of Belarusian Bolshoi have been left to the mercy of the artists of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic (European Art Centre in Białystok). They will have something to show! Theater critics say that this Carmen is a modern, original and controversial production directed by Beata Redo-Dobber. Fatal women – who are they? What attracts men and whether ‘femmes fatales’ understand that they determine the destiny of men with a single glance. Such questions invariably arise during and after the performance.

‘Yes, the audience will see modern realities of everyday life in our performance. But on the other hand, Carmen is Georges Bizet’s musical masterpiece, and we remained faithful to the principles of the brilliant composer. The production staged by Beata Redo-Dobber and conductor Michał Klauza is a story of passion and search for true love. I hope that our performance will present genuine- strong and unforgettable feelings and emotions to the Belarusian audience,’ the director of Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Damian Tanajewski admitted.

The Belarusian audience is really lucky, because on 18 December, they will hear artists, who conquered not one venue in the world by their vocal talent. People constantly talk about lyrical tenor Rafał Bartmiński (Don José) that he is a ‘noble artist with a magnificent voice.’ Critics also always say exceptionally glowing things about the brutal Dariusz Machej (which is supposed to be Escamillo). They do not spare words to Katarzyna Trylnik. ‘The virtuosity of the singer’, ‘beautiful bright soprano’ – all these words about the Polish artist, who will appear in the role of Micaëla in Minsk.

The role of Carmen will perform prima donna of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus Oksana Volkova. She is the Honoured Artist of our republic, laureate of the State Prize; also she won the 4th National Theatre Award in the nomination Best Female Talent in the Opera Performance for the role... Carmen! Oksana Volkova calculated that the performance of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic will be the 16th production of Carmen, in which she sings the title role: ‘But it is an invaluable experience, because every director has his own Carmen. And the opera forum is always a great music festival, which is known far beyond Belarus.’ On 18 December we will see what will bring Oksana to this role of Carmen in the production of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic.

In addition maestro Grzegorz Berniak will conduct the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus and Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Choir and Children's Choir will take part in the performance.
