The spirit is defeated, but not broken

In the period from 1860 to 1870, Giuseppe Verdi has been through series of deaths of dear to his heart people. His father, close friend librettist Piave and brilliant composer Rossini died one after another. The composer was also devastated by the death of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi simply idolized. Actually, Manzoni’s death was the immediate reason for the creation of the Requiem: ‘I am deeply saddened by the death of our Great Man. I will come to his grave to offer something as a tribute to his memory.’ This grandiose monument was the funeral mass, first performed on 22 May 1874 in Milan's St Mark's Basilica (conducted by the author himself). A few days later, the Requiem was repeated at the Teatro alla Scala with great success... ‘The spirit is defeated, but not broken...’ - this is the idea of this powerful funeral mass. On 25 April it will be performed on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus in memory of the Chernobyl tragedy. 35 years have passed since that black day for the whole of Belarus…

On 25 April the performence will feature Ekaterina Semenchuk, Nadine Koutcher, Alexander Roslavets, Pavel Petrov. It is significant that this day the soloists who sing at famous venues of various countries will perform. Each soloist will sing Verdi's Requiem at the Belarusian Bolshoi for the first time. Dmitry Matvienko will conduct. The maestro only started working in the theatre, but the audience has already delighted with him, the good warm words that sound in his address on various Internet forums dedicated to the musical art speak volumes about it.
