Gennadi Yanin as Modest

The 84th season of the Belarusian Bolshoi was remarkable for the fabulously beautiful Ballet Summer at the Bolshoi. But masterclasses of Gennady Yanin, a soloist of the ballet company of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, became a kind of discovery for our artists. ‘I can’t call my classes difficult or vice versa simple. They are rather uncomfortable for the artist. And I do it deliberately. When a soloist dances the usual, logical and convenient choreography on the stage, he or she will feel like wearing slippers after the ‘horror’ that he or she has been forced to endure at the Yanin’s lesson,’ the Honored Artist of Russia smiled.

And on the 20 October our audience will be able to see the winner of the special jury prize of the Golden Mask National Theatre Award: Gennadi Yanin will perform his signature role of Modest in Anyuta by Valery Gavrilin. Many critics even called Yanin "the best Modest".

“No matter how well I dance, the role of princes I never got due to my appearance,” the artist admitted. “But there are a lot of good roles in my collection. Modest in Anyuta is one of them. I have danced it for a long time. It is great that there is an opportunity to hone that role. If I do something not so good today, I can correct it next time. Of course acting aspect is very important in this role. But it is also important not to overplay. In ballet you have no voice, but by your moves and suppleness you need to convince the audience that there is an old man on the stage. And you should do it so the audience doesn’t scream ‘I do not believe it!’.”

By the way, Gennadi Yanin has Belarusian roots. ‘Quite often in my school years I spend my summer holidays in Brest. My grandmother and mother from this beautiful city,’ said Gennadi.
‘Now I understand that when I was running around the streets in short pants it was almost ashes, because less than 30 years have passed since the end of the Great Patriotic War. But still Brest was a charming provincial town, clean and tidy as, perhaps, all in Belarus. And of course, the ruins of the Brest Fortress, which are surrounded by mystery, stories and legends, made a very strong impression...’
