In October 2022, after a long break, the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia hosted the Belarusian Bolshoi. It really became an event – both for the company from Minsk and for the Moscow audience. Unique performances were presented on the Historical Stage: Vladimir Soltan’s national opera King Stakh’s Wild Hunt and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker choreographed by Valentin Elizariev.
A year ago, the general directors of two theatres Catherine Doulova and Vladimir Urin agreed that the Bolshoi Theatre team would definitely perform on the Minsk stage within an exchange tour. It took a long time to decide what exactly the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia would bring. And yet we settled on two productions.
On 22 and 23 November, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar's Bride will be performed.
The opera is about the unattainability of happiness in love and the destructive power of jealousy in the very dramatic circumstances of the Russian history of the XVI century during the reign of Ivan the Terrible and Oprichnina. The events of the tragic historical episode of Ivan the Terrible's third marriage to the merchant's daughter Marfa Sobakina, her inexplicable illness and imminent death, which caused numerous accusations, death sentences and cruel executions, are presented in a romantic opera implemented by the composer in a peculiar way.
On 22 and 23 November, the maestro of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia Konstantin Chudovskiy will conduct.
On 25 and 26 November, ballet to music by Sergei Prokofiev Ivan the Terrible will take place.
It is one of the most famous Grigorovich’s ballets, in which he addressed Russian history: the beginning of the reign of Ivan the Terrible. As usual, Grigorovich is interested in the confrontation of strong extraordinary personalities: in this case, the Tsar Ivan and his confidant Prince Kurbsky. To the music of Sergei Prokofiev from Sergei Eisenstein's film Ivan the Terrible, the main character goes a long way from a young ruler, enthusiastically dreaming of a wonderful future for his country, to a monster, a spider hanging over Russia.
The world premiere of the ballet Ivan the Terrible took place at the Bolshoi Theatre on 20 February 1975. New version was staged in 2012.
The performance will feature Svetlana Zakharova, Denis Rodkin, Mikhail Lobukhin, Anna Nikulina, Artemy Belyakov.
The Honoured Artist of Russia Pavel Klinichev will conduct.
