On 27 October the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus will present a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata starring Italian and French opera soloists. This is a joint project of the theatre, French and Italian Embassies in Minsk.
One of the most popular operas in the repertoire of the world musical theatre was composed after The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas who was an acquaintance of its real prototype. As his heroine, Verdi chose a woman who was rejected by the society and emphasized it by the title (“La traviata” means ‘the woman who stayed’ or ‘the fallen one’).
The role of Violetta will be sung by the French singer Maryline Leonetti, a graduate of the Université and the Conservatoire d’Aix-en-Provence, the Instituto Mascagni de Livourne, the Conservatoire de Marseille where she had majored in organ, singing, orchestra and chorus conducting. The singer has performed the role of Violetta in Bastia, Corsica, at the Festival Lyrique du Val de Seine, and in Craiova, Romania.
The Italian baritone Marcello Lippi will perform the role of Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont. The singer was born in Genoa. He received the diploma at the Conservatorio di musica N. Paganini. Later he continued his singing studies with Fernando Bandera, Tristano Illersberg and Giuseppe Murmura. At present he is Artistic Manager of the Pisa ‘Fondazione Teatro Verdi’.
The role of Flora Bervoix will be sung by the thick mezzo-soprano, Emanuela Grassi. She graduated in singing from the Pergolesi Conservatory in Fermo and in piano from the Conservatorio di Musica Luisa D'Annunzio di Pescara.
The performance will be conducted by the French maestro François-Robert Girolami. The maestro is a conductor of the National Orchestra of Sibiu in Serbia, as well as of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Craiova where he conducted La traviata at the Festival Lyrique du Val de Seine in November 2013. His repertoire includes numerous productions of Verdi’s La traviata which have been performed
under his baton in Bastia, Craiova, etc.
