226 singers from 20 countries submitted their applications for the 3rd edition of the Minsk International Christmas Singing Competition. Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Canada, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Lithuania, the USA, France, Mongolia, China, Armenia, Israel, Latvia, Turkey, Sweden, Korea, Ireland – young singers from the aforementioned countries will come to the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus from 7 to 13 December. By the way, not only the expert jury, but you too will evaluate the competitors’ vocal skill. Traditionally, you will hear the competitors in the big hall (main stage) of the theatre on 11 December (the second round) and on the 13 December (the finalists’ gala concert) when apart from certificates and prizes the audience prize will be awarded. Besides, the winners of the previous editions have also been invited to perform in the gala concert. Those names, including Ramiz Usmanov (Uzbekistan), Nadezhda Pavlova (Russia), Mykailo Malafii (Ukraine), Lasha Sesitashvili (Georgia), Elena Stikhina (Russia), Viktor Mendelev (Belarus), Ilya Silchukov (Belarus) are already known well to opera admirers.
We remind you that the singing competition will have three rounds; the first and the second rounds will take place with piano accompaniment, and the third (final) one with orchestral accompaniment. In the final the competitors will sing a lead role in scenes from classical and modern operas opposite the stars of the Belarusian Bolshoi.
The grand prize winner will receive US $ 10,000, the winner of first prize will be awarded US $ 8,000 in prize money, the winner of second prize will collect US $ 6,000 in prize money, and US $ 4,000 will be given to the winner of third prize. But the most important thing is that many emerging artists will be granted engagements with the major opera houses and companies.
The best of the best will be selected by the expert international jury comprising managers of major opera houses, producers, eminent figures in the field of opera: Tadey Eder, General Director of the Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (Ukraine); Academician Plamen Kartaloff , Director of Sofia National Opera and Ballet (Bulgaria); John Allison, Editor of Opera magazine (the UK); Prof. Christoph Meyer, General Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Germany); Maurice Xiberras, General Director of the Opéra de Marseille (France); Gianluca Marcianò, conductor, Artistic Director of the Al Bustan Festival in Beirut (Italy), and many others. Vladimir Gridyushko, General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus, will preside over the organizing committee of the competition.
The competition will be immediately followed by the 7th edition of the Minsk International Christmas Opera Forum which will be held from 14 to 20 December and feature stars of world-famous opera venues. So within almost two weeks artists, musicians, noted directors, producers, managers of opera houses from 32 countries will visit Minsk!
The Minsk International Christmas Singing Competition was launched in 2014 at the instigation of the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus. Belarusbank is the general partner of the project.
