On 18 February the role Canio in a performance of Pagliacci, a masterpiece of Italian verismo, one of the best pieces by Ruggero Leoncavallo, will be sung by the People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Azar Zeynalov. Azar Zeynalov is a graduate of the Azerbaijani State University of Culture and Arts (the department of directing), Agostino Steffani State Conservatory, and Baku Academy of Music (voice departments).
In 1990, he became a soloist of the Rashid Behbudov State Song Theatre. In 1996, he joined the opera company of the Azerbaijani State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.
In 2001, Azar Zeynalov was appointed to head the voice department of his alma mater, the Azerbaijani State University of Culture and Arts. Since 2016, he has been engaged as head of the voice department of the Azerbaijani National Conservatory. He is the author of the textbook Vocal Performance. His repertoire includes lead roles in operas by Azerbaijani and European composers. In 1995, the singer was decorated with the gold medal of the Turkish Islamic Cultural Society. The title of the People’s Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan was conferred on Azar Zeynalov in 1998; the title of the People’s Artist of the Republic of Dagestan was bestowed on him in 2008.
