Mykhailo Malafii sings Riccardo

The stage of the Belarusian Bolshoi Theatre wouldn’t part with the young tenor Mykhailo Malafii. Once again, he will star in Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi as Riccardo. And once again, the soloist of Lviv Opera will perform at our theatre, and receive thunderous applause and... steal ladies’ hearts. On 18 March, Malafii will once again appear as Riccardo on the Belarusian stage in one of the most beautiful operas by Giuseppe Verdi Un ballo in maschera.

For the seventh time, the soloist of Lviv Opera will perform in Minsk, the city that gave Mykhailo a launch pad for his future successful professional career. Malafii has performed in many theaters around the world: The Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Serbia, Italy and France. And yet, Minsk was at the very beginning. It is the stage of our Bolshoi where the Ukrainian tenor was awarded First Prize at the Minsk International Christmas Singing Competition and the Audience Award, having captivated the audience with his beautiful deep voice and wonderful stagecraft, with music critics writing in accord with audience’s praises, calling Mykhailo ‘the golden voice of Ukraine.’ ‘The major victories and trials of the young tenor are yet to come,’ noted the reviewers of classicalmusicnews.ru, ‘but his emotional plentitude and expressiveness of tone with unconditional temperament, complemented by youthful exuberance and commanding stage presence are worth mentioning.’

Malafii was born in a Ukrainian village Pomonyata of Ivano-Frankivsk region. He has always loved singing, maybe, taking after his father who still sings at church. During his school years Mykhailo used to be a ‘star’ taking part in school performances, festivals and competitions. By the way, without knowing a single note, he played the accordion and the synthesizer. And now, the 26-year-old singer, having graduated from the Lviv National Musical Academy, sings with the company of the Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet . His frequent touring activities encourage Mykhailo to learn languages: English, Italian, and Russian. Mikhail claims he understands Belarusian easily, saying that our language is very much like his native, Ukrainian.

The artist has mentioned several times that coming to Minsk was like coming home because of its warm welcome. Belarusian fans really love the singer, and Mykhailo reciprocates a hundredfold, ‘Every time I sing I try to give joy to the audience,’ says Malafii, ‘because there is nothing like music to heal a man’s soul."

Maestro Viktor Ploskina will be at the conductor's stand this evening. The main roles will be performed by the celebrated soloists of the theatre, the People's Artist of Belarus Nina Sharubina (Amelia), Vasily Kovalchuk (Samuel), the Honoured Artists of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Gromov (Renato), and Alexander Keda (Tom).
