Oksana Volkova at the Met

The Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus Oksana Volkova performed the role of Giulietta in Jacques Offenbach’s masterpiece Les contes d'Hoffmann at the Metropolitan Opera.

On 26 September the new production of the famous conductor, musical director of the Canadian Opera Company Johannes Debus and the director Bartlett Sher premiered. The New York Times called Bartlett Sher one of the most original and exciting directors not only in the American theatre but also in the international world of opera. Oksana Volkova will sing nine performances. The title role of the poet Hoffmann was sung by the brilliant Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who works with the Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House and others. Erin Morley (Olympia), Anita Hartig (Antonia / Stella), and also Tara Erraught, Christophe Mortagne, Laurent Naouri participated in the premiere performance at the Metropolitan Opera.

Les contes d'Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach is not the first role of the Belarusian Opera diva at the legendary Met. In January 2013 she made her Met debut in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. Her stage partners were Diana Damrau, Željko Lučić, Piotr Beczała.
Then Oksana Volkova was invited to take part in the premiere performance of Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, which was presented to the audience at the opening of the new season at the Metropolitan Opera. There she sang Olga with world famous Anna Netrebko performing Tatiana.  After the premiere, admirers worldwide were able to watch the live broadcast of this performance as part of an ambitious project The Met: Live in HD. In 2015, the singer performed in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District on the stage of the same theatre.

Besides the Metropolitan Opera, the Belarusian singer appears at prestigious Russian, European and Latin American venues. Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra de Nice, Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele in Palermo, Teatro di San Carlo, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Bavarian, Riga Opera, as well as theatres in China, Japan and other countries are among them.
