The Story of Kai and Gerda. Premier at the Bolshoi

The Snow Queen is one of Sergei Banevich's most famous operas. The world premiere of the opera took place 42 years ago on the 24 December 1980 at the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre in Leningrad (now the Mariinsky Theatre).

The libretto was written by Tatiana Kalinina based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen, the fairy-tale that every child knows. It’s interesting, that Swedish opera diva Jenny Lind, with whom Andersen was unrequited in love, became the prototype of the Snow Queen.

‘This story and the opera after it are equally addressed to adults and children,’ the composer Sergei Banevich said. ‘It, like educational novels, tells how easy it is to lose and how difficult it is to find yourself.’

Anna Motornaya heads the production team, which includes conductor Yuri Karavaev, set designers Andrei Merenkov, Olga Melnik-Malakhova, costume designer Tatyana Lisovenko, lighting designer Evgenii Lisitsyn, computer graphics designer Julia Pintsak, choreographer Julia Markovskaya and chorus master Sergey Agranovich.

The designers face a difficult task: to combine the dualism of elements, images, characters – and reflect it on the stage. Cold and heat, ice and flame, the flame of a sincere, loving heart…

The leading soloists of the opera are working on the lead roles: Oksana Volkova, Daria Gorozhanko, Ekaterina Mikhnovets, Aksana Yakushevich, Tatyana Gavrilova, Nastassia Khrapitskaya, Anastasia Mikhnovets, Elena Zolova, Dmitry Shabetya, Yuri Gorodetski, Andrey Klipo, Dzianis Yantsevich, Dmitry Kapilov, Andrei Matyushonok, Alexander Gelakh, Victor Mendelev, Olga Malinovskaya, Elena Salo, Nina Sharubina, Stanislav Trifonov, Elena Tabolich, Kriskentia Stasenko, etc.
